Typographic Shape Studies - Concord & Discord
Spring 2024 – 17" x 22" Inkjet Print
This pair of typographic compositions explores the emotional and visual contrast between discord and concord through expressive, hand-painted letterforms. On the left, a dynamic, sweeping brushstroke forms an abstracted R to represent discord. The gestural quality, irregular texture, and turbulent motion of the mark evoke tension and instability. The accompanying quote by Louise Fili underscores the importance of individuality and creative disruption in the design process. On the right, the upside-down letter L is rendered with more controlled, vertical brushstrokes to symbolize concord. The repetition and rhythm of the lines create a sense of harmony, balance, and order. The structured composition is paired with a quote by Paula Scher, emphasizing clarity and intentionality in navigating technology and design. Together, these studies explore how form, texture, and gesture can communicate complex emotional states within a single letterform.
